Driffield put Westoe to the sword

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A sunny warm afternoon welcomed Westoe to Kellythorpe. Westoe who had come down from the league above last year, and having lost 2 and won 1 this season, the home crowd wondered how today’s game would play out.

The two teams lined up for kick off at 3pm, Westoe looking the larger of the two sides, but maybe not the fittest. Westoe kicked off, Driffield let the ball bounce and Westoe regained pos-session, but couldn’t break the Driffield defence. After only 4 minutes, Driffield showed the Kellythorpe supporters they meant business, following some good build up play, R Mewburm made a break and supplied a brilliant off load to Askew who crossed out wide. Lucas missed the conversion.

Only 2 minutes later, Furbank caught the Westoe side half asleep, having won a penalty, Furbank took a quick tap and ran in untouched from the half way line. Lucas converting.

Wilson then scored the try of the game. Piercy made a great break passed to Forbes who beat a couple of defend-ers before going to ground, Jones then passed to winger Blacker, with prop Wilson on the overlap Blacker drew his man and passed to Wilson who crossed in the corner. Lucas convertingIt was a further 10 minutes before Driffield secured their bonus point, Driffield won a scrum against the head, Forbes picked up and walked in under the post. Lucas converted. Westoe won a penalty. Kicked to corner, from the lineout they drove Driffeld backwards, the maul collapsed and the referee gave a penalty try. Converted.

Piercy was next to cross the line. Good ball from a Driffield scrum, saw Driffield backs in full flow, Furbank hit the line at pace and broke through the Westoe defence, offloaded to Piercy who crossed for his second. Lucas con-verting.Forbes was on hand to finish the next one. From a lineout G Mewburn broke through and made good yards, offloaded to brother Rob, who was held up short, good recycling found Nellon who beat a couple of defenders before passing to Forbes to score. No conver-sion. HT 36 -7.

Straight from the restart Furbank scored again, from a lineout, the ball went down Driffields back line, Furbank entered with speed and broke straight through, scoring out wide. Lucas converting Jones was next on the scoresheet, after good pressure from Driffield, Jones got the ball beat a couple of players and crossed near the posts. No conversionPiercy broke the defence again, he then found Blacker who squeezed past two defenders to cross in the corner. Conversion missed.

Driffield gave away a penalty just inside the Westoe half, after some backchat, the ref moved the penalty 20m further up the field, Westoe kicked for the corner, and from the following li-neout they caught and drove scoring out wide. Conversion kicked.Nellon was next to score, after a poor kick by Westoe found a Driffield player, he beat two men before passing to Nellon who crossed the white-wash. Conversion missed.

Another bad kick from Westoe found Blacker, who beat 3 defenders to score under the posts. Conversion Goldworthy.Westoe hadn’t given up yet, and seemed to be still hunting a bonus point. From good lineout ball, Westoe backs made an overlap for the winger who crossed in the corner. No conversion.Straight from the restart, Piercy caught the kick, beat a couple of tacklers to run in under the posts, conversion Goldworthy. With 10 mins left Stephenson came on, he scored 3 tries in the 10 minutes to make the final score Driffield 84 Westoe 19.

Westoe looked a very poor side, who will struggle against most sides. However it was good to see Driffield punishing a side.Next up we go to Northern (who lost to Westoe Last week).My man of the match was Alex Piercy.
