Striders women earn top spot

Superb running from Driffield Striders women earned top spot in the second cross-country race of the season on Sunday.

Winning the team prize at Drewton Woods (South Cave) edged them closer to leaders City of Hull AC after two rac-es of the East Yorkshire Cross Country League.

Racing over heavy undulating land, the field was led home by Phil Taylor (Bridlington Road Runners) in 41 mins. 50secs. He was chased all the way by Strider Shaun Hobson, fourth in 42.19.

Less than a minute separated Jazz Edeson (46.57), Adam Anderson (47.22), Jon Morgan (47.26) and Jon Rodger (47.51), closely followed by Nick Smith (49.10), Neil Ridsdale (50.41), John Harrison (50.43) and Alison Crellin (50.44).

Also packing well were Emma Wil-liams (52.20), David Parkin (52.37) and Zoe Parkin (53.33), followed by Andrew Boyes (54.44), Sian Morgan (55.15), Mar-tin Stack (55.55), Simon Starrett (56.05), James Abel (58.41), Benita Boyes (62.14) and Daisy Morgan (69.18)

Strength in depth has been the main factor in Striders success this year, with the club being boosted by an influx of ex-perienced and new runners.

Strider Neil Ridsdale doubled up at the weekend, racing both days. On Saturday, battling constant heavy rain and fog, he was fourth (3hrs. 48mins) in the 24 mile Kilburn Kanter. Organised by North York-shire Long Distance Walkers Association, the event in the Hambleton Hills, includes over 3,000 ft. of climbing.

The following day Neil joined club col-leagues in the latest East Yorkshire Cross Country League race at Drewton Woods (South Cave).

Driffield Striders train Tuesdays and Thursdays, meeting 6.30 at Driffield Rugby Club. All runners are welcome to join them.
