Opening date announced for £25m East Riding Leisure Bridlington

The £25 million East Riding Leisure Bridlington will open to the public on Monday Monday 23 May 2016.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, announced the date today (11 April) at the venue on the seafront in the town, where works are nearing completion.

He said: “I have great pleasure in announcing today that East Riding Leisure Bridlington will open to the public on Monday 23 May. This represents not only a much earlier date than we had originally anticipated, but also the start of a total transformation of leisure facilities in Bridlington for residents and visitors alike, in time for the whole of the vital summer season.

“I am delighted that this project will have been completed ahead of schedule and within budget, and I would like to congratulate all our officers who have been involved in the work, and our contractors, BAM Construction Ltd, who have done a superb job. I also again thank Sport England and the Coastal Communities Fund for their invaluable funding contributions.

“I believe this will be one of the best Leisure Centres in the country, with superb facilities across a wide range of activities, from swimming to climbing; from a 100 – station Tone Zone to indoor sports; and from our health suite to the new café with unrivalled views across the bay. The new Centre will play a key role in our award- winning East Riding programme of health checks and wellbeing, benefitting Bridlington residents even further.

“But the centre also includes the Splash Zone, with fun interactive slides for young and old alike, which have been created to make our customers – both locals and visitors – want to come back for more. The Centre has been carefully designed to be a wet weather facility, helping to increase the appeal of Bridlington, no matter what the weather. East Riding Leisure Bridlington will add to the menu for tourists to the town, and encourage them to stay here longer.

“The opening of this new £25 million East Riding Leisure Bridlington represents the latest stage of the regeneration of the town. I am very pleased that this council is playing a key role in attracting investment into Bridlington to help secure its future; our significant financial contribution to this new Centre, of nearly £21 million, was made possible by our prudent financial management over many years.

“While some other local authorities are closing facilities such as Leisure Centres, we in the East Riding continue to use capital investment to make better use of our buildings and also achieve long-term savings, whilst at the same time improving services for our residents.

“I am firmly convinced that East Riding Leisure Bridlington will help put Bridlington firmly back on the map, as a ‘must visit’ destination on our beautiful coastline. This is just the start of the renaissance of the town, along with our other redevelopment work in areas like Hilderthorpe Road.

“Here’s to a new golden age for Bridlington, with Sewerby Hall and Gardens flourishing, thanks to a vast increase in visitor numbers since its superb refurbishment, and the continued success of The Spa Bridlington, not forgetting the award-winning beaches and seafront facilities. Bridlington will be restored to its rightful place as a family favourite, and a real success story, with East Riding Leisure right at its heart.”
