Driffield School & Sixth Form’s Year 7 Girls’ cricket team were crowned champions of Yorkshire after beating all-comers from the South, North and West of the county in the finals’ day at York Cricket Club on Monday.
The current East Yorkshire champions had qualified for the event despite all members of the team being a year younger than the majority of the other competing players, but they were confident of putting on a good show having played together for a number of years.
In the first game, the girls came up against National Indoor finalists Macmillan Academy from Middlesbrough, and they were undaunted despite the quality of the opposition. After a tight bowling display, they restricted the North Yorkshire champions 56 runs after their eight over innings.
A sensible batting display from openers Rosie O’Rourke and Brooke Potter complimented by some big-hitting from Abi Howland, took Driffield close to their target. The game was then finished off by Tess Kirven and Lily Sheriff who secured a four-wicket victory.
Some excellent bowling in the second game saw the girls restrict Kettlethorpe High School from Wakefield to 35 all out. Eve Naylor and Mia Duggan bowled particularly well in this game before Holly Snaith and Rosie got the reply off to a bright start and helped secure an easy six wicket win.
This result created a ‘winner takes all’ final group game against South Yorkshire champions Winterhill School from Rotherham. Prior to this game, Winterhill’s opening pair had retired in every game after hitting sixes galore. This remained unchanged with both girls retiring.
However, some great captaincy from Tess and clever team tactics restricted the remaining batters to singles and dot balls. Winterhill eventually finished their innings on 64 after seven overs.
An excellent batting display from Rosie, Brooke, Abi and Tess made sure the team required six off the final over and they hit the winning runs with three balls to spare to end what was a fantastic advert for school cricket.
As champions of Yorkshire, the girls will now progress to the North of England finals at Barnsley Cricket Club in July.
