Incredible hard work and determination has paid off for female body builder Steph Clappison after she earned her place in the National Amateur Bodybuilders’ Association Miss Universe finals.
Steph, who owns The Nail & Beauty Secret salon in Driffield, was inspired to take up bodybuilding after losing a close friend to cancer. After witnessing the strength and courage shown by her friend Lynne Bristowe, Steph felt she needed to challenge herself and at the same time raise valuable funds for charity At the NABBA British Finals in Southport at the end of May, Steph came 6th in the Toned Figure class earning her a place in the NABBA Universe finals competing against bodybuilders from across the world.
Steph told the Wolds Weekly: “I am so happy to have made it through to the Universe finals. It is incredibly hard to qualify and I am delighted to have made it.
“I have trained hard with no alcohol allowed; no sugar and many hours spent in the gym on both cardio and weights, but all the hard work has been worth it.”
Steph began training with Dan Welburn at the Workout Gym in Hull in March last year and after just over a year she has made it through to compete with the best in the world. She said: “Dan has been amazing and so incredibly supportive. There were two other girls from Dan’s gym competing in the toned figure class in Southport and we were all placed and also a girl from the gym came first in the Athletic class. It was a fantastic day for the gym and brilliant to share this experience with them.”
On Sunday, Steph once again pulled out all the stops to be placed 4th in the toned figure class at the IBFA (International Bodybuilding & Fitness Association) British Finals at Gateshead. Steph said competing is not for the faint hearted.
She said: “I have difficult days where I don’t feel I am coping with all the rigorous training and diet plan, but then I think of the bigger picture and what I want more.
“I am really looking forward to the Universe finals in October and will give it everything, but I am looking forward to a few days off now before I get back to the training.”
