Residents invited to view initial plans for the Beverley Arms

Thwaites, which bought the building earlier this year, will be investing millions of pounds into transforming the site into a destination coaching inn, with guest rooms, restaurant and bar area.

As it puts the final touches to the planning application, the project team will be hosting an open event at the site, where people can view floor plans and initial design cues. It will take place on August 8, 4pm-7pm in St Mary’s Church, near to the Beverley Arms.

Daniel Thwaites Chief Executive Officer, Rick Bailey, said: “We are very excited about our plans for The Beverley Arms and have worked hard to put them together.

“We know the building is well loved by the community from the feedback we have had since purchasing the site, and we wanted to make sure what we planned was just right for the area and sensitive to its Grade II Listed status.  We’re really pleased with how it’s coming together.

“Our focus has been about making the best use of the space so we can provide the best customer experience possible. As a result, we’ll be reducing the number of guest bedrooms considerably but in doing so we will be improving the quality significantly.”

If plans are approved by the local council, it will see the whole ground floor completely reconfigured, with the main entrance opening into an informal bar area linking to a more formal dining area.

The external courtyard will be significantly improved and there will be better linkages between the internal and external spaces.

One of the key features of the planning application will be the demolition of the rear building, which will be replaced with a new extension that is more in keeping with the area. It will house 38 bedrooms, a reduction on the 54 currently in the building.

Mr Bailey added: “We are aware that the rear extension is the subject of much discussion locally, as we have had numerous questions about it when we have been visiting the site. Hopefully this will be a welcome feature of our planning application and will open up the views of St Mary’s Church when approaching the town from the racecourse.

“Anyone who has visited The Judge’s Lodging in York will see the standard of renovation we have been involved in previously and we think our plans for Beverley will be just as good.

“We love The Beverley Arms, it’s a fantastic building with so much potential and we are looking forward to turning it into the best coaching inn in the area.”

The Beverley Arms will be part of the Inns of Character portfolio, a group of historic coaching inns that Daniel Thwaites has been steadily building into a collection of high quality, well invested properties in some of Britain’s most beautiful towns and villages.

The acquisition of The Beverley Arms follows on from the successful re-launch of The Judge’s Lodging in York, which reopened as one of the Inns of Character in June 2014 following a £2.5m refurbishment, and The Toll House, Lancaster, which re-opened in December 2015 following a substantial improvement programme.
