Join the fun at Driffield Navigation Gala this Weekend

A free festival extravaganza for all the family. Heritage fans are being urged to support and celebrate Driffield Canal’s ongoing restoration at a two-day family fun event this weekend.

People are invited to a fundraising festival in aid of the historic navigation at Riverhead, Driffield, on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th of July.

Registered charity Driffield Navigation Trust, which runs the 11-mile, 250-year-old waterway, is organizing the free admission extravaganza. Visitors will be able to enjoy boat trips from Riverhead to Town Lock and back, on both days, and also try their hand at navigating a pedalo on the waterway.

The festival is being supported by Driffield Town Council, Driffield Agricultural Society, and Driffield & Wolds Weekly who are all keen to see heritage events in the market town. In 2022, the navigation commissioners joined forces with the town council to stage a Yorkshire Weekend event, which included a two-day Canal Fest at Riverhead.

David Taylor, canal commissioner, said: “We want everybody to come along and be entertained, and at the same time we will be raising awareness about what is happening on the canal. We are dedicated to getting Driffield Canal fully open and operational, and recently appointed some new commissioners to help us achieve our goals. We have spent more than £600,000 on new locks and bridges, and there are a number of ongoing projects in the pipeline for which we will need funding, so we hope people will continue to support us.”

Music will be a feature of this year’s Canal Fest, and the trust has lined-up a number of singers and a jazz band to keep visitors entertained on both days.

John Scholey, trust chairman, said: “Everybody loved the music last year, so we will have some excellent entertainers, as well as the usual water-based activities, like boat trips to Town Lock and back, pedalos, paddle boarding, and a steam river launch. The trust is keen for people to get involved with the canal by coming along to the festival to see what is going on and have some fun and games.”

Entertainment on the Saturday afternoon will be provided by the Gaslight Dixieland Jazz Band, and Kylie, the brilliant East Coast soul singer. On Sunday, the Gaslight Dixieland Jazz Band will play again, and there will be a return of fabulous singer Kenny J, the ‘The One & Only Elvis Presley’.

Also helping to keep the entertainment going will be the Great Driffield Radio roadshow.

The festival will also include a licensed bar, barbecue, and refreshments, and will run from 11 am to 6 pm on both days. Find us at Riverhead, Driffield YO25 6NW.
