BRITISH STEEL TO SHUT BLAST FURNACE IN SCUNTHORPE – PUTTING 2,000 JOBS AT RISK
British Steel is planning to close its blast furnace in Scunthorpe, putting around 2,000 jobs at risk.
The Chinese-owned company wants to replace the blast furnace with electric arc furnaces, one in Scunthorpe and the other in Teesside.
The construction is expected to take up to three years.
The changes are likely to lead to between 1,500 and 2,000 job losses, mostly at the Scunthorpe furnace.
