Driffield Show 2024: Chairman looks foward to ‘The best one-day show in the UK’

Driffield Agricultural Society’s chairman George Hamilton said the Driffield Show has retained its strong focus of educating people about food and farming and maintains its place as one of the best one-day agricultural shows in the country.

Mr. Hamilton has been involved with the Driffield Agricultural Society for around 40 years and sits on the Board of Directors.

Having worked in the animal feed industry for 20 years, Yorkshire Agricultural Society and the renewable energy sector for 11 years, he is looking forward to meeting the different people involved with making Driffield Show such a success.

He said: “The Driffield Show has everything for a fantastic day out.

“I am looking forward to seeing the agricultural machinery demonstration area because we are very much an agricultural show, and this is a great way of showcasing some of the marvellous machinery used in agriculture.

“The main ring has a full programme of activities including Atkinson Action Horses which will be fantastic.

“We have record entries in the horse and pony sections and in the heavy horses, and they are always a fantastic sight.

“The carcass competition and poultry are back in the show, which is good to see, and we have the second highest number of sheep entries, with nearly 500 sheep entered, as well as good numbers of cattle and other stock.

“Looking around the livestock is always a high point for me.

“The Showground will be full of agricultural and other trade stands and there is always lots for everybody to see.

In my opinion, it is still the best one-day agricultural show in the country. It is a great shop window for the agricultural trade to showcase who they are and what they do.

“For our younger visitors, we have the red pig trail, which is a series of information and did you know boards around the Showground, which should be of great interest.”
Mr. Hamilton said after being involved with Driffield Show for 42 years, this year as chairman will give him the opportunity to look at it from a different perspective.

“Driffield Show appeals to a broad audience because it is a friendly family show, but still very much farming-oriented and it has retained its strong focus on giving people information about food and farming.

“It is nice that I will be spending the day with our president Chris Byass and his wife Rosemary because they have been so committed to the show for many years.

“We want to see as much of the show as we can and meet as many people involved. We have put our order in for the sun to shine on the day and look forward to a great day.”
