New cafe at Alfred Bean Hospital for those affected by cancer

An opportunity for cancer patients, family and friends to meet others in an informal setting and gain information and support is being offered at a new Cancer Wellbeing Cafe being launched at the Alfred Bean Hospital next week.

The cafe will run weekly on Tuesdays from 1pm until 3pm, starting next Tuesday, 16th July.

It is open to anyone living with cancer – patients, family and friends – and will provide an opportunity to meet others and have a chat in an informal setting whilst offering information, activities and signposting additional support.

There is no need to book, people can just go along at any time during the session and stay for as long as they want and refreshments will be provided.

The café is a partnership between Saint Catherine’s Hospice – whose wellbeing team will be leading the sessions – Saint Catherine’s Driffield Support Group and Alfred Bean League of Friends – who are providing volunteers to help at the café.

The League of Friends is also funding the rooms for the café through the Dobson Family Charitable Trust who support their work, without which the project would not be possible.

Saint Catherine’s Support Group member and Driffield resident Gill Ullyot said: “I’m so pleased that we are going to be able to offer this wonderful chance for support locally in Driffield.

“Living with cancer brings so many challenges and if we can help in some small way by being there for a chat or making sure somebody gets the information they need then the café will be so worthwhile.”

Nicky Ingham, treasurer of the League of Friends explained why they have chosen to support the event.

“Alfred Bean Hospital is an important facility in our community and the more use we can make of it for valuable projects like the café the better,” she said.

“Offering something on our doorstep so people from Driffield and the surrounding villages don’t have to travel miles to access support was something we were only too pleased to get behind. We are looking forward to meeting lots of people and seeing the group grow.”

For the first couple of café sessions, the Saint Catherine’s mobile resource hubs (pictured above) will also be visiting the site for anyone who would like to have a look around and see what’s on offer. This is open to anybody to pop along and find out more.
