Driffield RUFC – a message from the president ahead of the 2024-25 season

New Driffield RUFC president Simon Megginson is proudly following in his family’s footsteps.

He is the third generation to take on the role in a connection between the club and the family stretching back decades.

“It is a great honour,” he said. “My grandfather was a founder member of the club and my father was first team captain the year I was born in 1961. They both went on to be president of Driffield RUFC and my uncle was chairman at one time.

“We have a lot of tradition. I think we are the first family to have had four generations play for the first team. My grandfather and father played, and I must admit that I only played 10 or 15 minutes in one game, but my son made his debut in one game last season.

“I was never a regular in the first team. My brother was, but I only made the one appearance. I mainly played for the third and fourth teams, although I had a good run in the seconds once in the late 1980s.

“I like to say I am the most successful captain the fourth team have had!

“All my sons have played. Will is the third team captain again this year, Edward was fourth team captain for a short while until he moved away but he is still the fixture secretary, and Jonty made his first team debut last year.

“All the boys came through the minis and junior section so I knew what a great job that does.”

Simon has chosen Mind as his charity to support during his year in office and said one of his community aims is to bring some of Driffield’s other sports teams to Kelleythorpe to see how well the rugby club is doing and to inspire them to success of their own.

He said: “I think the town, as a whole, punches above its weight with sport. The cricket club has always done well, we are doing well, the hockey club is very well supported and it is great to see football progressing with the leadership of Jim Laird and Andrew Dixon.”

He is expecting a busy 12 months and wants to reach out to all areas of the rugby club.

“This season, I am looking forward to being president,” Simon added. “I am following in the footsteps of two or three presidents who have never missed an event and I might struggle to repeat that. But I would like to watch the second, third and fourth teams and also to support the ladies team. I will be trying to support everyone I can and will do my best to get round everybody.

“The club has been very well run over the last 20 years or more and we are enjoying a great period of success.”
