Striding the Wold Rangers Way for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Staff from NFU’s Driffield branch will be aiming for a five-star performance when they tackle the Wold Rangers Way this month.

Michael Hadfield, Kate Mitchell, Vicki Jenkinson, Sally Thorley and Aimee Hara will begin their 43-mile trek on the morning of Saturday 28th May from the Capital of the Wolds.

The quintet plan to split their challenge, which they have entitled ‘Between A Walk & A Hard Place’, in two, walking around eight or nine on both days.

NFU’s team will march around 23 miles to Thixendale before being picked up and returning to their homes on the Saturday.

They will reconvene in the village the following morning to complete the final 20 or so miles back into Driffield town centre.

The group had discussions on participating in a charity challenge in 2022 and settled on the Wold Rangers Way.

They will support Yorkshire Air Ambulance and NFU Driffield’s agent and group secretary, Michael Hadfield, told the Wolds Weekly: “We spoke as a team about doing an event this year.

“We wanted to do something which would raise money for charity after Kate initially suggested it.

“We settled on Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) as the charity of choice as we live in a rural area and support lots of farmers and people living on the Wolds.

“The dangers of working alone can be highlighted if someone has an accident and YAA is a fabulous charity which supports people in need.

“It’s a charity which relies solely on donations, with no central funding, whilst all of us know some who it has come to the aid of.

“It was my idea to do the walk and we are looking forward to it.

“We have already undertaken a couple of practice walks and have others planned for this month.”

The Wold Rangers Way takes in an epic 43 miles from Driffield through ancient green lanes and bridlepaths of the spectacular Yorkshire Wolds as walked by the Wold Rangers in years gone by.

The Wold Rangers were a nomadic group of men and women who travelled from farm to farm seeking shelter and sustenance in exchange for work.

The route was officially launched in August 2021.

Michael added that the group has set themselves a fundraising target of £2,000.

“Our target total is £2,000, as we think it is fairly middle of the road and think it is achievable.” he added.
