Mayor’s afternoon tea for the unsung heroes of Driffield’s community

Paying tribute to groups, organisations and individuals who help to make Driffield a great community to live, mayor Cllr Mark Blakeston is hosting a Thanks in a Million Afternoon Tea to show his gratitude for their efforts.

Countless charities, community groups and organisations work tirelessly to give the young and old in Driffield friendship, opportunities and fun and help to make Driffield the thriving community it is.

During his year as mayor, Cllr Blakeston has been invited to share in these experiences and felt he wanted to do something to thank those people for all they do for Driffield and for helping to make his mayoral year so special.

He has organised a Thanks A Million Afternoon Tea, which will take place at the Bell Hotel on Saturday 25th February.

More than 100 invitations have gone out to people from the Driffield community and Mark said he hopes it will be an afternoon to remember.

He said: “Typically mayors will have a civic event of some form to mark their year and often this involves inviting other civic dignitaries from across the East Riding.

“When I set out as mayor, I said I wanted to support local groups and organisations and so I thought it would be really nice to finish my year as mayor with a civic event that celebrates the fantastic community in Driffield.

“People have been really kind and invited me to lots of events and when I look back at my diary over the year I have met so many inspirational people, who give up their free time, whether it be working with young people, older people or veterans, which really makes Driffield the community that it is.

“We also have fantastic high street businesses which also help create that community as well.

“I thought it would be nice to bring those people together and thank them – thanks a million – for all they do.

“More than 100 invitations have been sent out and we hope it will be a relaxed afternoon with some entertainment and it is just my opportunity to thank them for what they do.”
