Driffield School show is a true rock classic

Driffield School & Sixth Form rocks! It’s official – and judging by the reaction of the audiences at the school production of We Will Rock You, I am not alone in my admiration of the hard work and effort put in by every single member of the cast and crew.
This is the first production staged by the school since the pandemic and the much-anticipated return did not disappoint.
The hit musical We Will Rock You is a jukebox musical based on the songs of British rock band Queen with a book by Ben Elton.
The musical tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought and fashion, and live music in a distant future where everyone dresses, thinks and acts the same.
The principal cast delivered outstanding performances belting out Queen classics which had the audience singing along.
The young actors put their hearts and souls into portraying their characters and the comedic performances had the audience in stitches – from the love tussles between Galileo and Scaramouche to the hilarious one liners and facial expressions from Buddy.
The “evil” Killer Queen and her second-in-command Commander Khashoggi gave powerful performances and I certainly wouldn’t want to bump into either of them in a dark alleyway!
Oz’s beautiful rendition of ‘No One But You’ against a backdrop of images of icons of music who left the world too soon was deeply moving.
Brit’s leadership of the Bohemians and his belief that the Dreamer will fulfil the prophecy and bring real music back into the world was superbly performed by the talented actors.
No musical, especially one based on the music by Queen, would be complete without the fantastic performances by members of the school band led by Ben Couper, which had the whole of Driffield School Performing Arts block clapping their hands and tapping their feet.
The production wouldn’t have been able to pack as much punch if it wasn’t for the fabulous crew who kept everything running seamlessly.
From the stage design, the lighting and sound to the costumes, make-up and hair, it all added to the professionalism and the polished end result.
And last, but not least, the vision, drive, enthusiasm and support from head of drama Ady Colley who made it all possible.
His passion to stage this full scale musical shone through and made it a week to remember for all involved.
Thank you Driffield School & Sixth Form for a brilliant evening of entertainment, with laughs, powerful performances, fantastic acting and most importantly some of the greatest music of all time. Rock on!
