Bridlington to host Tour de Yorkshire as Driffield misses out again
Disappointment is the overwhelming feeling in Driffield after the Capital of the Yorkshire Wolds missed out on the opportunity to be a host town for the Tour de Yorkshire 2017.
Six host towns were announced shortly after 11am this morning, with Bridlington selected for the second time in three years.
The host towns are :-
- Scarborough
- Bradford
- Harrogate
- Bridlington
- Tadcaster
- Fox Valley in Sheffield
Town Clerk of the Driffield Town Council, Claire Binnington, said: “Despite a media frenzy yesterday stirred by the fact that they couldn’t ignore Driffield again – could they?? Possibly??? Surely not?? They have.
“Once again Driffield has been overlooked by the Tour de Yorkshire organisers and the race will start or end again in Bridlington.
“What about the other towns in the East Riding that would have welcomed the race with equal gusto and enthusiasm – not just Driffield – but Pocklington, Market Weighton, Hornsea, Withernsea?? We are very disappointed.
“Perhaps next year they will have the belief that our small market town could truly do the race justice and give everyone a fantastic warm welcome.
Driffield & Wolds Weekly’s Andy Stabler said: “It’s a huge disappointment that Driffield, the East Riding’s biggest sporting town, again misses out. It’s a shame the host towns are not being shared out in the East Riding.”

A final announcement of the route will be on Friday 2nd December, where Driffield will be hoping to be part of the Tour for the first time.
