Eleven goals at James Moorfoot memorial match: Langtoft Legends 6 Langtoft AFC 5
A thrilling contest at Kilham Playing Fields was a fitting tribute to former Langtoft AFC player James Moorfoot.
The current Langtoft side lost 6-5 to Langtoft Legends on Saturday 6th August in a match which raised funds for Bridlington Heart Screening Day.
James died, aged just 28, suddenly after collapsing whilst playing for Langtoft on 11th February 2017.
Bridlington Heart Screening Day was created in his memory and hosts annual heart screening days in conjunction with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) in Bridlington for young people aged 14-35.
The group requires £5,000 in order to host each day and Saturday’s 11-goal thriller helped to support it.
Tom Benninger was the hat-trick hero for the Legends, whilst Mark Lister, Karl Marley and Josh Christlow were also on the scoresheet.
For Russ Macdonald’s men, goals came via Josh Hirst, Callum Turner, Max Longley and an Adi Hammond brace.
Macdonald told the Wolds Weekly: “It was a great game and the Legends were a credit to themselves, playing very well.
“There were a few who I will be tapping up for a return to our Saturday team!
“I was tactically outsmarted by their coach, but it was all for a good cause and it’s fantastic that we can support Bridlington Heart Screening Day.
“We have tried to host an annual match since James’ passing, but COVID hampered that slightly, but it’s great to be back.”
In a further poignant moment, pupils from Hornsea School, where James was a teacher, placed a bench made from Lego which adorns a plaque bearing his name at Rudston Playing Fields.
Langtoft earned a league and cup double last season and will compete in the East Riding County League’s Division One come September.
Speaking ahead of the new campaign, Macdonald said: “We’re looking forward to a bigger challenge this time around.
“We still had to work hard last season, but we know we’re going to have to work a little bit harder to compete if we’re going to be anywhere near the top this season.
“It’s going to be tough, twice as hard, as we’ll be up against better teams and we’re under no illusions of the task ahead.”
