City of Hull AC and Beverley AC continue to dominate the East Yorkshire Cross Country League after the fourth race of the series at Sledmere.

They lie first and second in both men and women’s competitions after 284 runners tackled the longest race in the league.

The seven-mile route in the grounds of Sledmere House comprised two scenic laps, including tracks, road, woodland and a long valley and uphill section.

Host club Driffield Striders’ strong squad included last year’s women’s champion Emily Soanes. Emily secured her second win of the season, finishing in 47 minutes and 16 seconds, 30 seconds ahead of nearest rival, Carla Stansfield (City of Hull AC).

Race winner Robert Sparkes (Beverley AC) clocked 40.47 to edge out East Hull Harriers Runar Saether, who stayed with him for most of the race.

For Striders, Richard Sirrs finished 11th in 45.32. Yorkshire Wolds Runners were led home by Nod Lamb (48.58) and Rachael Saxby (55.26).

Matthew Hunton, Sebastian Gryzlo, Martin Fenton, Charlie Leighton and Nick Scruton also contributed to Driffield’s men’s score. Emma Sanderson, Alison Crellin and Laura Kirby were the other points scorers for Striders.

With two races to go, Striders are fifth and seventh in the women and men’s competitions. Yorkshire Wolds Runners sit seventh in the women and 10th in the men’s.

The next race is at Beverley Westwood on Sunday, 12th February, starting at 10am.
