An evening with top BBC news presenter Stephen Sackur

BBC HARDtalk presenter Stephen Sackur will be this year’s guest speaker for Driffield Showground’s popular ‘An Evening with’ series.

‘A Conversation with Stephen Sackur’ will take place in the Rix Pavilion at Driffield Showground on Friday, 14th April, starting at 7pm.

Stephen is the current presenter of HARDtalk, the BBC World News flagship current affairs programme.
He has interviewed many prominent politicians from around the world, including former US vice-president Al Gore, President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, Shimon Peres and Mahmoud Abbas.

He has also interviewed leading cultural figures including Gore Vidal, Richard Dawkins and Noam Chomsky.

As a BBC journalist, he has covered many of the pivotal events of recent years, he was BBC Middle East correspondent in the 1990s covering the peace process, the assassination of the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the emergence of the Palestinian Authority under the late Yasser Arafat.

As BBC Washington correspondent, he interviewed President George W. Bush, covered the 2000 US Presidential Elections, and the Clinton scandal. 

He was the BBC’s European correspondent for three years, during which time he covered the Madrid terrorist attacks in 2004 and the EU expansion. 

As part of the BBC’s team of correspondents covering the Gulf War, he was the first correspondent to break the story of the mass killing on the Basra road out of Kuwait City, marking the end of the war.

He travelled back to Iraq just after the downfall of Saddam Hussein and filed the first television reports on Iraq’s mass graves.

In 2010, he was awarded the accolade of ‘BBC TV Personality of the Year’ and he has contributed countless articles to The Observer, The London Review of Books, New Statesman, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph.

He was born in Lincolnshire, educated at Cambridge and Harvard and has family links with farming in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Driffield Showground has hosted a number of high profile speakers over recent years for their entertaining evenings including Peter Wright, the Yorkshire Vet; Richard Noble from the Bloodhound land speed record attempt and the Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen.

Tickets for ‘A Conversation with Stephen Sackur’ are priced at £15 each and includes a light supper, there will also be a bar.
