Anglers hoping to land prizes at Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championships

Areas of the East Yorkshire coast in the Wolds Weekly area will welcome anglers from the UK and abroad in March for the Paul Roggeman European Open Beach Championships.

The three-day beach fishing competition, which runs from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th March, stretches from North Marine Promenade in Bridlington to the Pilot Jetty at Spurn Point.

In between the two points, competitors can also fish from Fraisthorpe, whilst a popular warm-up event will also see entrants set up their rods on the shore in Barmston and Skipsea.

In 2022, Neil Robinson from Nafferton was declared the overall winner having caught an overall weight of 3,090g, whilst Ian Marshall, from Driffield, finished third, with 2,960g.

In the female competition, Shona Moore, also from Driffield, was top of the standings with a weight of 2,530g.

The 29th year of the event will see a table full of prizes and fishing equipment to be won.

Competitors will be able to pick up valuable experience, tactics, skills and techniques whilst enjoying a fun-filled weekend meeting new and old friends.

Some of the top companies within the industry will be exhibiting to provide competitors with an insight into all aspects of sea angling.

Advance tickets are always in high demand, with anglers visiting from across Europe.

Tickets will also be available between 4pm and 8pm on Thursday 2nd, 2pm and 8pm on Friday 3rd and 7am and 9am on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th March from the EOBC site office at Sand le Mere Holiday Village, Tunstall. Online ticket sales close on Friday 24th February.

The popular Flattie Bash warm-up event will take place on Friday 3rd March to start a full weekend of angling.

This catch and release event will be held between Fraisthorpe and Hornsea, taking in Barmston and Skipsea.

Fishing times are between 10am and 2pm and tickets are £10 per person, cash only, with registration taking place on the day at Floral Hall in Hornsea from 7am to 9:15am.

Fishing times for the main championship, men’s, ladies and juniors, are from 9am to 3pm on both the Saturday and Sunday of the weekend, with the results and prizes being made available both evenings at the event HQ, Sand le Mere Holiday Village.

For those who don’t catch anything in size, there is still an opportunity to meet other anglers, exhibitors and the Sea Angling Adventures team at the event HQ.

The first 500 anglers purchasing a weekend ticket will receive a free goody bag containing a range of sponsor freebies.

A shuttle service is available at a cost of £6 each way at Spurn Point on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th March and is limited to 16 anglers, contact info@ywt.org.uk for further information.

Cllr Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic development and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We are proud to welcome this prestigious angling competition back to our beautiful coastline.

“I am sure this championship will prove to be as popular as ever and a great success.

“It is without doubt the largest three-day beach fishing championship event in Europe, so we’re excited to welcome competitors from countries such as Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to enjoy our surroundings.

“This event generates an estimated £500,000 each time for local businesses and its invaluable to help keep our high streets thriving.”

Visit East Yorkshire Events operate a zero-tolerance policy towards littering at the event and request that all anglers are responsible for taking pride in the beaches and disposing of their own waste.

Spot checks will be carried out throughout the event and anyone not adhering to competition rules will be disqualified.

The event organisers’ decision will be final.

Competitors are advised that Ulrome, Aldbrough and Dimlington are now deemed highly unsafe and it is not advised accessing these areas during the EOBC 2023.
