PHOTOS: Runners enjoy racing at Sledmere Sunset Trail

Nearly 400 runners took part in the Driffield Striders’ annual running events held at Sledmere House Estate.

The runners were cheered on by many spectators in the stunning setting of Sledmere House Estate, with 344 completing the 10K race and 41 completing the accompanying 3.6km Trail Taster. There was also a 500 metre fun run for the younger children, which was once again sponsored by Driffield & Wolds Weekly newspaper.

The support of main sponsor Nicola Amidulla Mortgages and Sledmere estate management staff enabled Striders to create a spectacle whose popularity has soared since its inception in 2015. This year’s race sold out the 500 places quickly.

Striders senior coach Jon Purdy devised the courses for the races, which took runners through tracks, trails, woods and valleys, not normally open to the public.

Race organiser Trevor Walker was very pleased with the success of this year’s event and the bright, dry conditions were a real bonus. With the course being dry and firm for the competitors.

Pre and post-race massages were available and main sponsor Nicola Amidulla Mortgages were on hand to offer advice and answer any questions.

First Aid Box (FAB Training, Driffield) provided first aid cover for the evening, while a tea and coffee cabin was provided by Sledmere Estate.

Runners from over 40 clubs, as well as several unattached runners took part, including a very large contingent of 35 Bridlington Road Runners.

This year’s winner was Cameron Schafer of Beverley Athletic Club (pictured left) in a time of 37 minutes and four seconds, with Wayne Fennell of Selby Striders in second place (37:37) and Mathew Sizer of Driffield’s Yorkshire Wolds Runners in third place (37:52).
