MARKET WEIGHTON TOWN CENTRE ROADS UPGRADED AFTER £1.5 MILLION SCHEME

A major scheme to resurface and improve town centre roads in Market Weighton is now complete. East Riding of Yorkshire Council invested £1.5 million in the improvement scheme, which saw a one kilometre stretch of busy, main road through the town resurfaced, from York Road to Sanction Road, as well as some of the roads branching off.

The project began in April and involved resurfacing and improving York Road, Market Place, High Street, Finkle Street, Southgate and Sancton Road, between the junctions of Holme Road, York Road and the A1079 Sancton Road roundabout.

A large majority of the work was carried out in the evening to try to avoid disruptions to drivers and local residents, although some had to be done during the day.

The upgraded road surface has been designed to improve skid resistance and reduce traffic noise.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “This project is the most significant investment we’ve made in Market Weighton in recent years, and it’s transformed the town centre.

“This has been a long scheme and not in the easiest of locations, and I want to thank local people and drivers for bearing with us while we finished the work. I hope they can now see the benefits.

“We’ve already had compliments from some residents who said the new quieter road surface has helped reduce traffic noise.”
