Olympians in town to give top tips to Wolds gymnasts

Wolds Gymnastics Club were delighted to welcome Olympic and World Championship gymnasts Becky and Ellie Downie to its Skerne Road gym for an exclusive event.

Becky, 30, was part of the Team GB gymnastics squad at the Beijing and Rio de Janeiro Games and is also a multiple World, European and Commonwealth medallist.

Similarly, Ellie, 22, appeared at the Rio Olympics, has also won medals at major championships and was named the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2015.

Fifty gymnasts attended the event and there was lots of excitement in the build-up, with gymnasts practising their skills and preparing questions for the duo.

The morning started with a dance-style warm-up, choreographed by Becky and Ellie, with the gymnasts learning the moves to 7 Rings, by Ariana Grande.

Once warmed up, the gymnasts split into four groups and worked their way around four pieces of apparatus, spending 15 minutes on each.

Each child was given tips and advice from Becky and Ellie during the session, with their faces lighting up when they received praise from the gymnast sisters.”

“Even some of our experienced coaches commented that they felt inspired and had taken some new ideas away from the training session to bring to future classes here at Wolds Gymnastics Club,” said club coach Katie Nelson.

After a busy morning, the gymnasts and their parents and carers were given the opportunity to sit with Becky and Ellie and put some questions to them.

“There were some wonderful questions and it was amazing to hear some of the stories from the Olympics and the experiences Becky and Ellie have had along the way,” said Katie.
