Bus fares capped at £2 to save passengers cash

People from Driffield and the Wolds taking journeys on buses operated by East Yorkshire will see single adult fares capped at £2 from January after the company signed up to be part of a government-funded programme to help people save money.

The cap, which over 130 bus operators are on board with, will run from Sunday 1st January 2023 to Friday 31st March 2023.

Currently, single local bus fares in England cost an average of £2.80, however, according to the government, they can rise above £5 in rural areas.

The Department for Transport said that buses are the most popular form of public transport in England and make up half of all journeys.

The government is spending £60 million on the fare cap as it looks to ‘help families, students and commuters’, at the same time as taking ‘two million’ cars off the country’s roads.

Latest figures show that the number of people travelling by bus is rising, but the numbers are still significantly below the levels before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bus fares in England were up 4.2 per cent in the three months to 30th June when compared with the same period in 2021.

The government has said that the cap was an important way of helping the bus industry recover and allows passengers to save money.

In a statement, Go-Ahead, which owns East Yorkshire, said a single ticket could take passengers over 40 miles.

“Many of our passengers are feeling the pinch this winter as household bills mount,” said Martin Dean, Go-Ahead’s Managing Director, UK Regional Bus.

“So, we’re proud that all our UK bus companies are supporting this government initiative to help people with their travel costs.

“Under this special fare, you’ll be able to go further than ever for £2. We hope it will encourage people to try some new routes, have some adventures and to explore the freedom of travelling by bus.”
