End of an era at Eastfield Garden Centre

An era is ending at Eastfield Garden Centre today (Friday, 21st April) as Ruth Reverley works her final day before embarking on retirement.

For customers and staff alike it will be strange as they walk through the doors, not to see her greeting visitors to the centre, caring for the houseplants and being an all-round ambassador for Eastfield.

A spokesperson for Eastfield said: “We give heartfelt thanks to Ruth for all she has done over her many years here, from making planted arrangements for Mother’s Day to pricking out plants when there used to be a nursery, to organising poinsettias and pots for Christmas.

“And so we all would like to take this opportunity to thank Ruth for all she has done, and wish her the very, very best for the future.”

Ruth said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working at Eastfield and over the years, I have met many lovely customers, seen the business progress through three generations of the Stephenson family, and think it is wonderful all that’s been achieved to make Eastfield what it is today.”

Born locally, Ruth moved back to Bridlington and began working at the garden centre aged 19. A few years later she met and then married her husband John in 1981.

Ruth continued to work at the garden centre, reducing her hours to start a family, in fact working while heavily pregnant through the May bank holiday, and having her eldest Ddaughter just a couple of days later.

“The years go by so quickly,” she said. “I’ve seen many changes from the days when shrubs were all at the back of the centre and Highland cattle grazed out at the front”
