The inaugural Jack Stabler and Thomas Dennett Memorial Trophy football match took place last Thursday to celebrate the lives of two tremendous young men.

The sixth form communities of Driffield and South Hunsley schools united to remember and honour Jack and Thomas in a way that they would both have appreciated, through football.

Knowing how important football was to the lives of the boys, their friends were keen to organise a match that will be played annually in their memory.

Played out in front of a sizeable crowd of school staff, friends and family, with music blaring and banners being waved, the match turned out to be a close affair, played out in excellent spirits.

With the score at 1-1 at full time, a draw was declared and for this year the trophy will be shared between the two sixth forms, spending the first six months in Driffield.

Darren Andrews, head of sixth form at Driffield School said: “The Driffield Sixth Form team played with their hearts on their sleeve, giving everything in memory of their dear friend Jack and I could not be any prouder of their efforts or the outcome.

“They, and the many students who came to support, did Driffield School and Sixth Form and the wider community proud.

“They have started something that will now be an annual event, and which will establish a legacy in honour of Jack Stabler that is deeply rooted in compassion and friendship and love.

“A truly fitting tribute.”

After a goalless first half, South Hunsley missed a penalty before Driffield thought they had taken the lead through Noah Kelly, only for the goal to be unluckily ruled out for offside.

South Hunsley then made it 1-0 with a fine strike from the edge of the area.

But with only five minutes remaining on the clock, tremendous work by Ollie Hakner on the wing saw the ball break free in the South Hunsley box, with Ewan Johnson on hand to knock in the equaliser.
