M&Co’s Driffield store closes for the final time

Clothing retailer M&Co has closed its store on Market Place in Driffield, leaving a major hole in the town’s high street and members of staff searching for a new job.

Having been a fixture in Driffield town centre for the last 20 years or so, the Scottish-based company occupied one of the largest retail properties.

At the end of 2022, M&Co appointed administrators for the second time, after previously falling into financial difficulty in 2020.

In early 2023, M&Co was purchased by AK Retail Holdings, however, the buyout did not include the firm’s 170 stores across the UK.

It meant all stores were set to close in the early months of the year, with the suggestion that the Easter weekend would see the shops open for the last time.

However, the Driffield store was given a reprieve for just over a week and served its final customer on Tuesday, 18th April, with staff from the shop thanking customers for their loyalty over the years.

“AK Retail has bought the M&Co brand,” said a statement from the Driffield members of staff.

“So, today is our last day of trading. We would like to say goodbye to all our customers.

“Thank you for your custom, not only customers but friends.”

The nearest M&Co store to Driffield is now in Beverley, with the Bridlington branch closing back on 1st April.

M&Co was established in 1834 as pawnbroker Mackays and switched to selling clothes in 1953.

It was rebranded as M&Co in 2005. M&Co fell into administration in 2020 and closed 47 stores.

The Driffield outlet survived the cull two years ago as M&Co’s assets were bought back by the family that built it up.

AK Retail Holdings, which has bought M&Co, is the owner of plus size retailer Yours Clothing.
