Driffield’s Paddleboarding Paradise: SUP Enthusiasts Flock to North Frodingham Landing

A picturesque area of the historic Driffield Navigation has become a hotspot for one of the fastest growing watersports in the country.

Devotees of paddleboarding believe that North Frodingham Landing is one of the safest and most beautiful places for the popular pastime

On the last Bank Holiday Monday more than 30 paddleboarders launched their craft at the landing for a day of fun on the 250-year-old waterway..

The wharf is also popular with canoeists and kayakers, who can also launch at the Brigham Bridge and Riverhead areas of Driffield Canal.

Driffield Navigation Trust, which runs the 11-mile waterway, is keen to encourage people to use the canal for recreational purposes.

John Scholey, chairman, said: “North Frodingham Landing is a safe area for paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking, and also a beautiful part of the navigation.

“It was brilliant to see so many water sports enthusiasts using the landing to launch their craft over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

“Participants are asked to pay £5 a day to launch a paddle board, canoe or kayak, and there are honesty boxes at all three sites for the money.”

Owners of motor homes and camper vans can now stay overnight at Frodingham Landing and Riverhead, Driffield, at a cost of £10 a night. They should also use the honesty boxes.

David Taylor, trust press officer, added: “We don’t get any statutory funding, so every penny donated will go towards maintaining and improving the navigation.

“The trust is dedicated to getting the canal fully open and operational, and recently appointed some new commissioners to help us achieve our goals.

“We have spent more than £600,000 on new locks and bridges, and there are a number of ongoing projects in the pipeline for which we will need funding, so we hope people will continue to support us in whatever way they can, like using the honesty boxes.”
