The 80th anniversary of D-Day will be marked on Thursday 6th June, with events and commemorations taking place across Driffield and the Wolds to mark the occasion.

The Normandy Landings, more commonly referred to as D-Day, took place on 6th June 1944, when the largest seaborne invasion in history took place on the beaches of Normandy in France.

It was the start of the liberation of France and played a major role in the victory on the Western Front.

The special anniversary is being marked in Driffield and its surrounding villages, with some of the events taking place listed below:

● Driffield – Thu 6th 8am Proclamation by Driffield town crier, Brian Fairfield, Market Place

9pm D-Day commemoration with beacon lighting at 9:15pm, All Saints’ Parish Church

● Burton Fleming – Thu 6th 11am-3pm and 7pm-9pm Display of local history to view and at 7:30pm, Bruce Beswick will be speaking about a true account of a Burton Fleming man’s journey through World War Two, accompanied by photographs, with all invited to go along for a fascinating talk, Burton Fleming
Village Hall. The village hall will also be open from 11am-3pm on Friday 7th June, 10am-3pm on Saturday 8th June and 10am-4pm on Sunday 9th June.

● Fridaythorpe – Thu 6th 6:30pm Ringing Out For World Peace, St Mary’s

9pm Reading of The International Tribute followed by the lighting of the beacon at 9:15pm

● Langtoft – Thu 6th 2pm-4pm Afternoon tea, strawberries & cream, Langtoft Community Rooms

● Leven – Thu 6th 7pm Community event, Leven Sports Field, followed by lighting of beacon at 9:15pm

Sat 8th 11am Blessing of memorial, Holy Trinity Church, followed tea, coffee, and cakes in the church

● Lockington – Thu 6th 9:15pm Lighting of beacon, Lockington Village Hall

● Middleton-on-the-Wolds Thu 6th 3:30pm D-Day event, Middleton-on-theWolds Village Hall

9:15pm Lighting of beacon, Middleton-on-the-Wolds Recreation Club

Sat 8th 1:30pm D-Day event, Middleton-on-the-Wolds Village Hall

7:30pm 1940s The Mood Swings Vintage Evening Dance, Middleton-onthe-Wolds Village Hall

● Rudston – Thu 6th From 12 noon 1940s Day, Bosville Arms

9:15pm Lighting of the Lamp of Peace,

● Thwing – 7:30pm D-Day 80th Anniversary event with music, friendship, a quiz and a free glass of wine or a soft drink, followed by lighting of the beacon at 9:15pm, The Mere

● Tibthorpe – Sat 8th 3:30pm D-Day 1940s tea dance, Tibthorpe Village Hall

The Driffield & District Branch of the Royal British Legion is holding a short memorial service of remembrance to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

The service is being held in the Driffield Garden of Remembrance on Saturday 8th June from 10:45- 11:15am, with the service to start at 10:55am.

The Driffield & District branch members of the Royal British Legion invite all serving members of the armed forces, and armed forces veterans who live in the Driffield area and members of the public, to attend the short commemorative service.

The High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire, the mayor of Driffield and representatives from the Defence School of Transport in Leconfield have confirmed their attendance.

The Driffield & District Branch standard, and the Parachute Association Standard are to be
on parade, so medals may be worn.
