Sunday Lunch guide – places to enjoy a great roast dinner around Driffield and the Wolds

For many people, Sunday lunch is the most important meal of the week.
A proper roast dinner, with perfect Yorkshire puddings is a real treat, and it’s even better when you don’t have to cook it yourself, or do the washing up.
There are plenty of pubs and restaurants around Driffield and East Yorkshire which serve a superb, great value Sunday lunch.

Sunday lunch is a great British tradition and in 2012, it came second in a poll of the things people love most about our country.
Traditionally, it is made up of roast meat, roast potatoes, vegetables, gravy and, of course, those all important Yorkshire puddings.
Roast beef is usually served with horseradish sauce or mustard. Roast pork is usually accompanied by apple sauce, roast lamb goes brilliantly with mint sauce and roast chicken and stuffing is a perfect pairing.
Add some vegetables, such as roast parsnips, carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and peas, and you have a feast fit for a king.
It is thought that Sunday roasts originated as a meal to be eaten after church. A large meal after a church service is a common theme around Europe, but the Sunday roast is definitely a British tradition.
Families would place a large cut of meat in the oven as they got ready for church. Then, when they returned home after the service, it would be ready to eat.
If you are cooking at home, tips from chefs on getting the best meals include allowing the meat to rest before carving, and making sure the oven is as hot as possible before cooking the Yorkshire puddings, and don’t be tempted to open the door to check on how they look.
Or you could let somebody else do all the hard work – and the washing up – and try one of the local pubs and restaurants featured in our Sunday Lunch guide
