Rural Police Urge Toyota Hilux Owners to Boost Vehicle Security

Police are urging owners of Toyota Hilux pickup trucks to take immediate steps to secure their vehicles, as these models are increasingly being targeted by thieves.

The Toyota Hilux, widely used by farmers and rural communities across North Yorkshire, has become a frequent target for criminals. North Yorkshire Police’s Rural Task Force issued the warning following a series of thefts last autumn and more recent incidents in neighboring regions.

In response, officers have ramped up crime prevention patrols in rural areas and are engaging with owners of Hilux trucks and other at-risk vehicles to provide security advice.

Sergeant David Lund of the Rural Task Force emphasized the importance of proactive measures:
“While no security system is entirely foolproof, implementing precautionary measures significantly reduces the risk of theft or damage to your Toyota Hilux. Many vehicles in our area are now equipped with trackers and advanced security systems, which make it much harder for thieves. By investing in high-quality prevention tools, parking in secure locations, and staying vigilant, you can ensure your vehicle is well-protected.”

Tips to Protect Your Toyota Hilux

Police recommend investing in tracking systems, which can greatly enhance the chances of recovering stolen vehicles and catching offenders. Additional deterrents, such as steering wheel locks, immobilizers, and CCTV, are also advised to make your vehicle less appealing to thieves.

Warning About Keyless Entry Theft

The rise in keyless car theft, or “relay theft,” is another concern. Thieves use devices to trick keyless entry systems into thinking the key is nearby, allowing them to unlock and start the vehicle—even if the key is inside your home.

To protect your keyless entry car:

• Store keys, including spares, far from the vehicle and out of sight.
• Use a signal-blocking pouch, such as a Faraday Bag, to shield your key fob, and test the pouch regularly.
• If buying a second-hand car, have the keys reprogrammed.
• Disable the wireless signal on your fob when not in use, if possible.

By taking these steps, owners can help safeguard their vehicles and prevent them from becoming easy targets for thieves.
