Next week’s Skerne Road level crossing closure – All the dates, times, shuttle bus timetable and rail replacement information
Businesses, residents, organisations and rail passengers have been given a final reminder about next week’s much-debated closure of the Skerne Road level crossing in Driffield, which begins at 7am Tuesday 28th January.
Those affected are being told to plan ahead as essential upgrades being carried out by Network Rail on the Hull to Scarborough line are expected to cause disruption for the next six days.
Network Rail’s teams will be completing engineering work at the level crossing, with the aim of improving reliability on the railway and provide a safer experience for customers and those living in the area.
The work will include replacing the level crossing deck, implementing a new operating system, resurfacing the road and installing new level crossing barriers.
Network Rail has said the barriers will lower and raise more quickly, shifting from manual systems to electrical ones, which should benefit motorists and pedestrians.
However, as reported in the Wolds Weekly, many of those who live and work in the Skerne Road area have expressed their concerns about the effect the closure will have, citing a lack of consultation and notice.
During a recent online meeting, businesspeople and residents had the opportunity to give their thoughts to the team that will be taking on the work on behalf of Network Rail.
The team from Network Rail were also able to give more details about the closure, including how there was no other option than a full road closure and allayed any concerns about the diversion route.

Skerne Road Crossing Shuttle Bus
An accessible shuttle bus will run around the diversion every half an hour throughout the work, with additional services during peak times.
The buses will run between Driffield railway station and the entrance to McLaren Industrial Estate on Skerne Road, providing a link around the level crossing.

“Next week, we will carry out essential upgrades on Driffield’s main road level crossing to enhance reliability and long-term safety for all users,” said Amelia Fordyce, scheme project manager for Network Rail’s Eastern region.
“We understand that the closure will cause disruption to the local community, and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
“However, this work is critical as this ageing level crossing no longer has spare parts available, making these upgrades vital for the future of the railway.
“We strongly encourage all passengers to check National Rail Enquiries or their train operator’s website before travelling.”
Kerry Peters, regional director for Northern, added: “We are advising all customers who will be travelling between Beverley and Scarborough to allow more time for their journeys while this essential work is taking place as rail replacement services will be running.
“This is an important project that will allow us to continue running a safe and reliable rail service for years to come and we’d like to thank everyone in advance for their patience.”
A bus service will replace trains between Beverley and Bridlington / Scarborough
Buses will replace trains between Beverley and Bridlington / Scarborough in both directions from 7:30pm on Thursday 30th January until Monday 3rd February.
Trains will then run again as normal.

- Beverley – Station car park
- Arram – Not served by the replacement buses
- Hutton Cranswick – Next to the level crossing
- Driffield – Riverhead
- Nafferton – Outside the Cross Keys
- Bridlington – Front of the station
- Bempton – Next to the level crossing on Newsham Hill Lane
- Hunmanby – Bridlington Street, by the station
- Filey – Front of the station
- Seamer – Station Road, at the bus stops
- Scarborough – Westborough, outside the station
