Man and Woman Found Dead Beneath Whitby Abbey Cliffs

North Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into two sudden deaths after the bodies of a man and woman were recovered from beneath the cliffs near Whitby Abbey on the evening of Wednesday 30 July 2025.
Emergency services were called at 7.16pm following a report from a member of the public who had seen the pair on the rocks below the cliffs.
With the tide rising quickly, the Coastguard coordinated a helicopter recovery, and both individuals were airlifted to waiting ambulance crews near the Abbey. The operation was completed by 8.24pm.
Paramedics confirmed both had died at the scene. Their bodies were transported to hospital by ambulance.

Police are currently working to identify and contact the next of kin. An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, which will be reported to the coroner.
