Lifeboat Guild sales come to an end

Organisers of the Driffield Lifeboat Guild’s twice-yearly second-hand sales, which regularly raised between £1,000 and £2,000 for the RNLI, have confirmed that this year’s events will not be taking place.

The hugely-popular sales took place in spring and autumn in the Old Town Hall at The Bell Hotel.
The doors for the sales always opened at 1pm, however, those eager to bag a bargain, some of whom travelled from far and wide, would start queuing around an hour beforehand, with the long line of people often snaking along Exchange Street.

Once in the venue, people were able to browse a variety of stalls, with every penny raised going towards RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea.

The most recent sale took place last November and raised over £980 and Shirley Williams told the Wolds Weekly that the Driffield Guild is disappointed it can no longer continue one of Driffield’s longest-running events.

However, it is not the end of their fundraising efforts.

“We regretfully announce that we are no longer able to run our second hand sales in March and November,” said Shirley.

“These events have run successfully over many years and have been regarded as one of the town’s traditions.

“Many thousands of pounds have been raised and donated to the RNLI at these events and the Guild are sad not to be able to continue.

“We would like to thank everyone who has donated to and supported and contributed to them.

“Also, thanks to the volunteers who have helped on the day, George and Rita who allowed us to use the Old Town Hall as the venue and all those who came to find a bargain.

“Finally, all the committee members who worked tirelessly to organise and set up each sale.

“The Guild is continuing to raise funds to save those lives at sea with various events throughout the year.

“You can find us on the market with a tombola, selling Christmas cards and at the Christmas draw and our coffee morning.”

The Driffield Lifeboat Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 8th March at 7pm.
