Luke on the mend after breaking his back

Driffield’s Enduro motorcycle racer, Luke Flack, is on the mend after breaking his back and looking forward to his return to action in the coming months.

Luke, 19, broke his back after landing awkwardly following a mis-timed jump during a practice session in Doncaster in October. After landing a bit short on his jump, his back was compressed crushing 13 vertebrae, resulting in breaking his back, where he was rushed to Doncaster hospital.

Two months further on, Luke spoke of his eagerness to get back into action. He said: “It’s been incredibly frustrating not being able to compete after doing it for so long and I had to have some time off work as well.

“Luckily, I didn’t have to have any rehab and just had to wear a brace and take it easy but it was pretty painful.

“My vertebrae burst upon impact and the doctors said I was very lucky for it not to it hit my spinal cord.

“I had to spend a week in hospital but I’m able to get about a bit more now but I do still get some pain now and then.

“My confidence took a bit of a knock but I’ll be back and I’m hoping to be in action for February and compete in the European Championships which begin again in March.”

Luke on the mend after breaking his back Enduro motorcycles closely resemble motocross bikes and is a sport that Luke has competed in for around 10 years.

Last year he claimed victory in the British Extreme Championships and also competed in the final round of the World Indoor Championships in France, taking fourth place against the best that the under-23 category had to offer.

In the final European round in Germany, he claimed sixth place in the under-23 juniors. Luke, who races for York-based team, MPS Racing Sherco, missed out on trips to Poland, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Argentina and Brazil because of his injury. He is hoping to be able to travel to Germany, France and Holland, amongst other countries, to compete in this year’s championships.

He added: “I’d like to give my thanks to Black Farmer Sausages produced by Cranswick County Foods and Traditional Interiors Bespoke Kitchens who have sponsored me this year. Also, thanks to Chris Gray Ltd and Mick Seward for all their support throughout the year.

“I’m obviously grateful to them and would welcome any further interest for this year’s European Championship.”

Luke is always welcoming of further sponsorship and if you are interested in sponsoring him, contact him at luke-flack@hotmail.co.uk
