Olympic stars lined up for the official opening ceremony of East Riding Leisure Bridlington

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced today (Thursday 16 June) that the official opening of the new £25 million East Riding Leisure Bridlington will take place on Friday, 1 July, 2016.

Sporting celebrities involved in the opening ceremony will be Olympic swimming double gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE; Olympic badminton silver medallist Gail Emms MBE; and Dean Windass, former star of Hull City and now a club ambassador.

On the day of the official opening, the leisure centre will be open to the public as normal.  The celebrities will tour the centre and see a wide range of activities in the pool, Splash Zone, Tone Zone, and sports hall, and will meet specially invited guests and schoolchildren, before the official opening ceremony at 12.30 pm.

East Riding Leisure Bridlington was funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council (£20.9m); the Coastal Communities Fund (£2.1million); and Sport England (£2million).

The new centre opened its doors to the public on Monday 23 May, and has since proved hugely popular, with unprecedented public interest. Already, 1300 people have become members at East Riding Leisure Bridlington, and in the half term holiday week alone, it is estimated that around 15,000 people visited the centre.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said : “I am absolutely delighted with the public response so far to this superb new facility, the new jewel in the crown of Bridlington. It’s great news that we have been able to invite sporting stars of this calibre to the town for the official opening, and I look forward to a memorable day on 1 July!”

Adam Mainprize, senior facility manager at East Riding Leisure Bridlington, added: “We have had a wonderfully busy start to the centre, especially during half term, when poor weather contributed to huge numbers of visitors. I would like to thank our customers for their patience and their very positive response to the new centre.

I would also like to assure them that we have taken on board their feedback and suggestions since we opened. For example, we will shortly launch a new swimming programme, in plenty of time for the summer holidays, and will publicise it widely.”
