Bridlington landlady and daughter admit to illegal eviction
A Bridlington landlady and her daughter have appeared before magistrates where they admitted unlawfully evicting tenants from their property.
Elizabeth Colman, 47, of Scholars Way, Bridlington and her daughter, April Hugill, 26, of Priory Walk, Bridlington both appeared at Beverley Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 31 August where they pleaded guilty to one count of harassment and illegally evicting a tenant in October 2015.
The prosecution was brought by East Riding of Yorkshire Council following a number of complaints from the tenant and her family.
Colman was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay the victim compensation of £125. She must also pay £750 costs and a victim surcharge of £15.
Hugill was fined £250 as well as given costs of £750 and a victim surcharge of £25.
Paul Bellotti, head of housing, transport and public protection at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: “Landlords must ensure they follow the correct procedure when evicting a tenant and while the vast majority of landlords treat tenants lawfully and with respect, the council will have no hesitation in using its full powers from unlawful action by landlords.”
The council’s private sector housing team are available to offer advice to landlords who operate within the East Riding to ensure they are aware of the legal processes for evicting tenants.
