Police warning after 22 vehicles are targeted by criminals in the past 2 weeks

In the past two weeks there have been 22 vehicle crimes in Bridlington and Police are urging the public to help them in preventing offences and reporting any information about the people responsible.

Between Monday 28 November and Sunday 11 December Humberside Police have received reports of 17 thefts from vehicles, four vehicles being damaged and one theft of a car in Bridlington.

Nearly all the offences have occurred overnight between 10pm and 7am, with the majority in the Bempton Lane and Queensgate areas of the town.

It is believed that the offences are being committed by opportunist criminals entering vehicles that have been left unlocked. Once inside they have taken any items left on display, within the glove box or boot.

In response to the issue Police are increasing patrols focusing on tackling vehicle crime in the area, however the key to stopping these incidents is simple prevention.

Please keep vehicles locked when unattended and ensure that property isn’t left temptingly on display for opportunist thieves.

If people see a crime in progress the should call 999. Anyone with information about those responsible for the crimes are urged to call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Here are our top five tips to stop your car being targeted this Christmas:

  • Do not leave anything on display in your car, as even a plastic bag or a coat on a back seat could appeal to thieves. Also ensure you remove in-car electrical equipment – like Sat-Navs from vehicles.
  • Make sure you lock your vehicle when you leave it unattended.
  • Take all your belongings with you when you leave the car. If this isn’t possible store items in the boot.
  • If out shopping, try to park in secure car parks with CCTV and security or well-lit busy locations.
  • If you have a car alarm enable it before leaving your vehicle unattended.
