Glorious sunshine greeted runners as the Sledmere Sunset Trail race returned for the first time in three years.

Organised by Driffield Striders, the off-road race saw 325 runners line up on the start line, ready to complete the 10km course around the stunning grounds of Sledmere House.

There was also a Sunset Trail Taster event over 3.6km, and a 500m fun run for younger competitors.

The main race was sponsored by Nicola Amidulla Morgages for the first time and the Driffield & Wolds Weekly continued its sponsorship of the fun runs, with David Parkin and Trevor Walker acting as race directors.

David said: “It went really well and the weather was good this year.

“The last time the race took place was 2019, when it rained, and the last two years the race was postponed.

“The atmosphere was great and everybody seemed to be smiling.”

This was the sixth year that Sledmere House estate had hosted the popular event and participant numbers have doubled in that time.

Thirty-seven running clubs and fitness groups were represented.

One of the largest contingents came from Fitmums and Friends. It boasted the overall winner in Stuart Spencer (36:11), followed by Scott Hargreaves, of Bridlington Road Runners in 37.23 and Robert Preston (42.02), of Scarborough AC.

Unattached runner Anna Devine was first woman and fifth overall in 47.05. There were several runners in the 70+ age group, with Bob Eyre (Bridlington Road Runners) first man and Barbara Wesson (Fitmums and Friends) first woman.

For Striders, Terry McGuinness was first back in 55:02. Steve Evans (55:56) was close behind him, with Karen Gordon (1;00:15) and Hugh Boughton (1:00:21) completing the team.

Eight Yorkshire Wolds Runners members took part. The results were: Simon Matson (49:50), Caroline O’Neill (58:40), Rolan Schreiber (59:49), Wendy Marsh (1:03:16), Melanie Granger (1:13:13), Paul Baxter (1:13:13), Paul Daley (1:13:15) and Sian Rees (1:24:10).
