Buckingham Palace confirms the death of Her Majesty The Queen

The Queen has died at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace has confirmed this evening.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch in British history and the world’s oldest head of state.

The Queen’s eldest son, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, is now the King of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth nations.

The Queen’s family had gathered at Scottish estate in Balmoral after concerns for Her Majesty’s health earlier on Thursday.

No official details have been released about what will happen in the coming days.

It is expected the Queen will be given a state funeral and her body will lie in state to allow the public to pay their tributes.

The King will sign off the plans over the coming days.
