PHOTOS: Turnbull Trophy – Bridlington 24 Driffield 54

Driffield RUFC took the spoils as the Turnbull Trophy returned for the first time in three years.

The COVID-19 pandemic put paid to the previously annual contest between the Woldsmen and near rivals Bridlington, with Saturday’s match was the first meeting between the sides since 2019.

The result went to form, with Driffield running out comfortable 54-24 winners at Dukes Park against their opponents from the division below.

DRUFC director of rugby, Stu Cooper, said: “It was a good run out and important to get more minutes under our belts.

“We tried a few new things and scored some really good tries, but maybe conceded more points than we would have liked.

“We’ve probably found a few more players capable of stepping up into the 1st XV and we have to pick a squad of 18 from about 35 players, which is always a nice problem to have.

“It was great to be able to bring back the Turnbull Trophy and hopefully we can continue it going forward. It was a tough, physical game, just as wanted.
