£1.5 MILLION SCHEME TO RESURFACE MARKET WEIGHTON’S TOWN CENTRE ROAD TO START IN SPRING

A major scheme to improve the road surface on the main route through Market Weighton is to start this spring.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to invest £1.5 million in the resurfacing scheme, which includes a one-kilometre stretch of road in the town, from York Road to Sancton Road.

The project is due to start on Monday 15th April and take 20 weeks to complete, lasting until September, weather permitting.

The scheme will involve the resurfacing and other improvements on York Road, Market Place, High Street, Finkle Street, Southgate and Sancton Road, between the junctions of Holme Road, York Road and the A1079 Sancton Road roundabout.

Work in the town centre will be carried out in the evening to avoid disruption to residents, businesses and road users.

The road will reopen during the day.

Some work, mainly in residential areas, will need to be carried out during the day.

The plan will be divided into six schemes to avoid disruption as much as possible, with access given to the emergency services, bin collections, deliveries and post.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “This is a major undertaking but needs to be carried out to improve the road through Market Weighton for the benefit of everyone.

“We have tried to time these works to avoid disruption as much as possible and we’d like to thank residents, business owners and motorists for bearing with us while we carry out this scheme.

“We will be working closely with town and ward councillors, businesses and residents and try to be as accommodating as much as possible.”

Phase 1

This will involve the resurfacing of York Road, Market Place and High Street from around 15th April to 10 May, working Monday to Friday between 6pm and 11pm.

During those evenings, a temporary road closure will be in place for through traffic, with a diversion in place via York Road, the A1079 and Sancton Road.

Phase 2

The surface along Finkle Street will be patched and the mini-roundabout with High Street and Beverley Road will be resurfaced.

Evening work will be carried out from around 13th to 22nd May, Monday to Friday, between 6pm and 11pm.

There will be a temporary road closure of Finkle Street to through-traffic during the evening works, with a diversion in place via York Road, the A1079 and Sancton Road.

Phase 3

Southgate will be resurfaced in the evening under a temporary road closure, with work carried out Monday to Friday 6pm-11pm, from around 11th to 19th June.

Before that, improvements will be made to footpaths and kerbing during the daytime, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, from around 23rd May to 10th June, under temporary traffic lights.

Phase 4

The road outside the Tesco supermarket will be resurfaced on Sundays only, after trading hours, between 5pm and midnight, on 23rd and 30th June and 7th July, under a temporary road closure, with a diversion via Holme Road and the A1079.

Some daytime improvements to the footpath and kerbing will also be carried out during the daytime, expected on 20th and 21st June.

Phase 5

The section between Swales Drive and Cliffe Road will be resurfaced during the daytime, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, expected between 24th June and 12th July.

There will be a temporary 24-hour road closure for through-traffic, with a diversion via Holme Road and the A1079.

Phase 6

Sancton Road will be resurfaced between the Cliffe Road junction and the A1079 roundabout, working during the daytime, Monday to Friday 9am-5pm, expected from 5th to 16th August.

There will be a temporary 24-hour road closure for through traffic, with a diversion via Holme Road and the A1079.

Further work

In addition, resurfacing works are planned on Princess Road, Princess Close and Spring Road, due to be carried out during the daytime alongside Phase 6.
