West Yorkshire Police have said they have arrested a man as part of an investigation into a mother who was stabbed to death whilst pushing her baby in a pram in Bradford.

Kulsuma Akter, 27, died when she was stabbed in the Westgate area of the city at 3:21pm on Saturday.

She died in hospital of her injuries and police launched a manhunt in search of the suspect.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Cheshire.

Ms Akter’s baby was unharmed in the incident.

As police had had contact with the victim before she died, West Yorkshire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

A 23-year-old man who was also arrested in Cheshire on suspicion of assisting an offender remains in police custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Enquiry Team, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a mother has lost her life in the most horrific of circumstances.

“We understand that this has caused a considerable amount of concern in the local community. Local Neighbourhood Policing teams are patrolling the area conducting reassurance to the community.

“We would like to thank Thames Valley Police for their support and assistance in this matter.”
