£1.2 million road improvements for Pocklington town centre
Major new road improvements for Pocklington town centre are due to begin in the new year. East Riding of Yorkshire Council will invest £1.2 million in a package of work to resurface roads and paths in the town centre.
The scheme will be carried out in Market Place/Market Square, Union Street, Railway Street and West Green and is scheduled to start in early January and continue over the next eight months.
The resurfacing of Market Place/Market Square will follow the completion of a project to create a new pedestrianised area around the Jubilee monument in Market Place.
The resurfacing work will be carried out in the following phases:
Market Place/Square
This phase is due to take place between Monday 6th January and Friday 25th April. Most of the resurfacing at this site will be carried out in the evenings, from Mondays to Fridays, with occasional Sunday and daytime working hours.
No work will be carried out on Tuesdays to ensure market days continue as normal.
Union Street
Resurfacing here will be carried out in two sections, over four weeks, due to start in April.
The first section will involve work on roads and paths from Market Square to The Avenue, during evenings.
The second phase, from The Avenue to the Bridge Street junction, will involve daytime working.
Railway Street
Improvements are due to start at the end of April for two weeks. During the daytime, work will be carried out to upgrade kerbs and surface drains and there will be traffic lights in operation.
In the evening the road will be closed to allow for the resurfacing.
West Green
The scheme will take a break for around 10 weeks and resume at the end of July, during the school summer holidays, in West Green.
Resurfacing will take place during the daytime over the space of five weeks.
Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “This is significant investment which will refresh the roads and paths in the town centre for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors.
“We have tried to keep disruption to a minimum and I want to thank people for bearing with us while we carry out this scheme.”
The work will be carried out as part of the council’s annual planned road maintenance programme.
