Man jailed for racist vendetta against Hull station security staff member

A man who repeatedly targeted a member of rail security staff due to her ethnicity has been jailed. Following a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation, Dale Halliday, 64, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment and threatening behaviour at Hull Magistrates’ Court on 22nd April.

He was jailed for three months and issued with a two year restraining order which prevents him from contacting the victim and limits his access to the rail network.

The court heard how Halliday had previously targeted the staff member, subjecting her to numerous incidents of racist abuse for over a year.

Then on 19th October last year, he spotted her working at the gate line at Hull Paragon Interchange and went out of his way to approach her.

Once again he made racist slurs and subjected her to racist abuse.

BTP officers were called and Halliday was arrested.

Investigating officer PC Jack Davie said: “Halliday waged a personal vendetta against an innocent woman who was just doing her job, subjecting her to horrific racial abuse.

“His prolonged racist behaviour over a period of a year wore the victim down and affected her so badly she was forced to take leave from work.

“Together with the restraining order which will go some way to protecting the victim from further abuse, a jail term will hopefully serve as a wake up call to Halliday that racism on the rail network will never be tolerated.
