Emergency Services Launch Major Search at Thornwick Bay

Emergency services were called out at 9:33pm on Wednesday evening (July 30) to search for a swimmer reported missing at Thornwick Bay.

The operation involved Flamborough, Bridlington and Scarborough RNLI lifeboats, Humberside Police, The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter, a Coastguard fixed-wing aircraft, and Humberside Fire and Rescue’s drone unit.

The search covered a wide area, including Thornwick Bay, North Landing, and Flamborough Head. Flamborough RNLI’s lifeboat, crewed by volunteers, returned to its station at South Landing at 12:15am for refuelling and a crew change before continuing the search.

Challenging conditions, including a heavy swell at Silex Bay and poor visibility, hampered the operation. Despite extensive efforts, no trace of the missing swimmer was found. The search was suspended at 4:05am.

The Flamborough lifeboat returned safely to South Landing at 4:12am.
