Driffield Trip Day Returns Next Week

Organisers of Driffield Trip Day are hopeful the weather gods shine on them again when the traditional, annual outing to Bridlington returns for its 103rd year next month.
This year’s event will take place on Wednesday 6th August, when hundreds of children, their parents, carers and grandparents will set off from Driffield School & Sixth form School car park between 8:30am and 9:45am.
Last year’s Trip Day saw over 300 people of all ages travel to the seaside and keep the century-old tradition alive. The sun shone throughout the day, with many of the day-trippers choosing to spend their time on the beach, whilst others headed for the amusement arcades.
For the first time, there was also a festive element to Trip Day, as Christmas came early to Bridlington when East Riding of Yorkshire Council promoted some of the events that were arriving at the seaside in December. Bridmas will coincide with Trip Day again this year, with Christmas promotions taking place throughout the town.

The Driffield Children’s Outing, to give it its official title, took place for the first timein 1922 and has evolved over the decades. Each child who goes along receives pocket money to spend on the day, as well as discount vouchers and special Driffield Trip Day souvenirs.
Phoebe Broad, a member of the trip day committee that was formed when doubts were raised over the future of the event two years ago, told the Wolds Weekly that with costs increasing every year, organisers are grateful to those who have made donations over the last 12 months.
“It was a great day last year,” said Phoebe. “We had the biggest number of peopleon the trip for several years.
“I think we had over 300, which was good, and the weather was on our side. Youcan never account for that, but we were very lucky
.“It was also Bridmas when we went last year, which added to the day, and the council has organised for it to take place on the same date again.“
Last year’s trip was fantastic and raised loads of money and we have fundraised further over the last 12 months within the community, certainly a lot more than we have done previously
