The Buck Hotel up for Great British Pub Award

Selfless volunteers who formed the Helping Driffield COVID-19 coronavirus lockdown support group have been nominated for a national community award.

The group’s base, The Buck, on Market Place in Driffield, is a finalist in the Community Services category of the Great British Pub Awards.

The Buck was put forward in recognition of Helping Driffield COVID-19 which completed over 6,000 medication collections and 600 shopping trips to vulnerable and isolating residents of Driffield and the surrounding areas.

Formed at the start of lockdown by landlady at The Buck, Rhian Livingstone, it supported residents throughout the most difficult times.

Rhian told the Wolds Weekly that the whole team is excited for the awards ceremony, which will be streamed live in the pub from 6pm on Thursday 24th September.

“We’re delighted to have been put forward and, although we didn’t form Helping Driffield COVID-19 for awards, it’s always nice to hear that other people think we are deserving of them,” she said.

“We didn’t know anything about, although thinking back now I was prompted for answers to fill in by Craft Union, who nominated us!

“It’s a lovely gesture and whilst it is great for Helping Driffield COVID-19, it is also good for Driffield as we are nominated as ‘The Buck, Driffield’, meaning it is helping to put the town on the map.

“The whole team is buzzing and we can’t wait for the awards ceremony.

“Now we just need the people of Driffield to vote for us, as it is decided on a public vote.

“Everyone is excited and even if we don’t win, it will still be an amazing occasion.”

The Buck is up against five other finalists for the Community Services award.

An added bonus for the winner is £10,000 towards the business, as well as a £1,000 donation to a local charity of the winner’s choice.

Also making up part of the Helping Driffield COVID-19 team were Paula Hubbard, Lisa Thompson, Victoria Blythe, Ben Ringham and Matthew Cole.

Rhian added that her five fellow coordinators have been vital to the group’s success and none of what they have done would have been possible without them.

“My team were amazing throughout lockdown,” she continued.

“Everyone we achieved was made possible by them and nothing would have been accomplished without them.

“I would just like to say a huge thank you to all of Helping Driffield COVID-19’s volunteers and of course to my amazing team.”
