New CAMRA branch turns the spotlight on the Wolds’ best pubs

A Yorkshire Wolds branch of CAMRA has been set up.

CAMRA – which stands for Campaign for Real Ale – is an independent voluntary consumer organisation which promotes real ales, ciders and perrys, as well as traditional British pubs and clubs.

The organisation has had a Hull and East Yorkshire branch for several years, however, the Yorkshire Wolds branch will focus on what Wolds pubs have to offer.

The new branch’s patch will cover Hornsea across to Driffield and Wetwang, up to the North Yorkshire border and across to Flamborough and down the east coast.

The Yorkshire Wolds branch has been founded by Mark Pennington, who works at The Old Ship Inn, Bridlington and was former manager of The Board Inn on High Street in the Old Town.

“Historically, the local branch for the Yorkshire Wolds has been Hull and East Yorkshire,” said Mark, who has been a member of CAMRA for around a decade.

“Previously, that branch has had more of a focus on Hull than this area, but our aim is to support member public houses and brewers by promoting them and their cask ales.

“It’s quite a large area that we will be covering which encompasses around 90 public houses, of which up 70 sell cask ales.

“We will be asking members to visit pubs and put them forward for the nomination process to be part of the Good Beer Guide which is published annually.”

Mark added: “We will be welcoming CAMRA members old and new and next week will aim to establish a committee.

“Once that is arranged, we will be looking to arrange regular meetings around the area, visiting pubs across the Yorkshire Wolds.

“There has been strong interest in the branch, with around 30 already expressing an interest.”

In the latest Good Beer Guide, Driffield’s Benjamin Fawcett and St Quintin Arms in Harpham were the only ones from the Wolds Weekly’s area which featured.
