Friends taking on Great North Run in memory of Frankie Beasley

A group of 11 friends who all hail from Driffield and the Wolds will be lacing up their trainers and taking on the Great North Run early next month to raise money in memory of Frankie Beasley.

Frankie, the son of Alex and Lucy Beasley, sadly passed away at the age of just four weeks after being born prematurely last August.

During those four weeks, Frankie and Alex and Lucy, from Driffield, were cared for and supported by the staff at Leeds General Infirmary’s Neonatal Unit.

To raise more money towards the Neonatal Unit means the absolute world to Lucy and I, as we know that the money will be helping other babies and families similar to us.

Alex, along with Ian Marshall, Kev and Josh Barker, Craig Dallee, Craig Nicholson, Rhys Cadwallader, Rob Palmer, Jamie Hopper, Joel Wilson and Adam Leonard, is now looking to raise around £3,000 for Leeds Hospitals Charity, which enables staff to deliver the best care for patients, when they take on the world’s biggest half marathon on Sunday 11th September.

Previously, Alex and Lucy, with the help of staff at Driffield’s Tesco store, including Frankie’s grandma Christine, raised around £1,000 for the charity thanks to a car wash, tombola, a bucket collection and book stall.

And the couple also raised over £6,500 after organising a golf day and race night at Driffield Golf Club earlier this year.

Alex told the Wolds Weekly that reaching their fundraising target and supporting the staff who helped them so much would ‘mean the absolute world’ to him and Lucy.

And he can’t wait to head to the north-east and run the 13.1-mile alongside some of his best mates.
“I decided I was going to do the Great North Run at the start of the year when I saw it on Facebook and as soon as I mentioned it to the other lads, they all said yes straight away, without any hesitation,” he said.

“I know that some members of the group have been training for some time now and are hoping to finish in a good time.

“But I also know that others have been a bit slack with their training, but I am sure we will all get round the course.

“I think there is just myself and Rhys (Cadwallader) who have done the Great North Run before, although some of the others have run half marathons previously.

“I’m looking forward to doing the run with my friends. We have organised it so that we can all set off together but once we are away, I’m sure those who want to finish in a good time will soon peel away from the rest.

“As far as fundraising goes, the charity would like each individual to raise £300, so we’re looking at a target of around £3,000.

“We are currently at £575, which is amazing, but we have a long way to go. To raise more money towards the Neonatal Unit means the absolute world to Lucy and I, as we know that the money will be helping other babies and families similar to us.”
