Ruth Beckett’s new book on Alfred Bean Hospital’s history is available now

After almost two years of research and writing, Ruth Beckett’s history of the Alfred Bean Hospital is finally available for sale.

The Alfred Bean Hospital: A Community of Care traces the history of cottage hospital provision in Driffield, the launch of the National Health Service and the challenges faced in more recent times by the ‘Jewel in Driffield’s Crown ‘.

Ruth said: “The history of the Alfred Bean Hospital and its origins in earlier cottage hospital provision is a history of Driffield itself.

“The Alfred Bean Hospital not only cared for the local community. It was a community in its own right.

“In addition, it brought people together in fundraising and, in later years, campaigning for the very future of the Alfred Bean Hospital.’

Copies of Ruth’s history can be bought at the Driffield and Wolds Weekly office on Middle Street South, Driffield. Copies cost £20 each.

Ruth will be giving a talk to the Driffield U3A’s Local History Group about her book on Wednesday, 19th April, starting at 2pm at Driffield Community Centre.
